Nicole Atkins @ BBC television Centre

Before there was a blog at HaterHigh.com, I used to very occasionally post recordings I’d make of other bands, and sort of just pass the links out to friends and previously established fans of the band. When I recorded Nicole Atkins‘ set at Lee’s Palace some four years ago now (ohgodwhendidigetsoold?!), one such fan was Frank Yang of Chromewaves.net — a blogger who loves Nicole and blogged about her every chance he gets. I thought he might get a kick out of hearing the recording, but little did I know that he would LINK the page on his daily blog, after his review of the gig, right on his main page. My site hits went through the roof.

I guess that was probably, in a way, the catalyst for what became this site. It was the first time, anyway, that I thought it viable to host recordings of various bands without specific focus on a dedicated server, rather than on the Torrent sites live music usually congregates at (ie. DimeADozen.org). This blog wouldn’t open until well over two years later, but it definitely got the ball rolling.

Much more recently, I came across a rerun of a Later… With Jools Holland episode that featured Nicole (and Kings of Leon and Metallica, but that’s neither here nor there). Although mp3s of her performance are floating around on the internet (in state-of-the-art 128kbps MP3s, nonetheless!), I thought it would be worthwhile to make sure an upgrade was available and record the performances for FLAC archival purposes.

Whether you opt for the FLAC or the high quality MP3s, it’s a quick and easy download. Clocking in at under seven-and-a-half minutes and two songs, this is basically primo filler material for those ancient few whom still burn bootleg cds. For everyone else, it’s worth the download to check out how Nicole sounds like when backed by a string quartet — the string section was prevalent on her debut LP, Neptune City, but was replaced with keyboards when on tour. I’ll give you a hint: it’s a real treat.

Thanks to the BBC for recording, Jools Holland for having the band on, and the band itself.
